This palm does best in dappled shade, but tolerates full sun and dense shade very well. Strong winds can damage the leaves, so plant in a sheltered site if possible. Enjoys lots of nutrients, so pile on the well rotted manure or liquid feed regularly though the growing season. Remove old tired foliage as required.. Soil preparation: Trachycarpus fortunei prefers well-draining soil that retains some moisture. A mixture of loam, sand, and organic matter (such as compost) will create a suitable growing medium. Ensure that the planting site has adequate drainage to avoid waterlogging. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball of your palm.

The growth rate and the height of this palm species vary, depending on the sun exposure a plant is getting. T. fortunei grows best in the shade, forming a slender and taller trunk. While it grows fine in full sun as well, it tends to be stouter and shorter. When growing, the tree should ideally be planted in partial shade.. Rounded crown of dark green leaves 1-2 m long, with 30-50 leaflets, these 60-80 cm long and 2.5-4 cm wide, arranged in a tight fan at the end of a 60-100 cm petiole. The species is dioecious, with separate male and female trees. The fruit is dark purple-blue when ripe, round, about 1 cm diameter, with a single seed.
